The REST we all need
Written by Claire McCann
I have a newborn.
That's probably enough for most of you to have flashbacks of sleep depravation and exhaustion like no other. There are those fairytale stories of babies who sleep all night from birth, but God saw fit to sanctify me by NOT giving me that baby. Though I've learned to thoroughly enjoy those every 2 hour middle of the night feedings ... it is still tiring.
Are you tired...
Longing for just a moment to "find yourself" again?
I know throughout every season of life and especially child rearing, momma's can feel a desperate need for rest. What happens when we finally get the sleep or the night out with friends and we still feel that same desperation?
Have you ever been desperate for rest?
Have you felt the crushing burdens of life weighing on you?
We all have those times where circumstances or just our internal struggles have us feeling weary. Most often we parallel changing those feelings with our circumstances needing to change.
But what if they don't?
Where can we turn for rest when we can't change anything about our day to day life?
“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Matthew 11:28-29 NLT
We can so easily believe that we should only bring God into our good desires. He tells us to come to Him even with the heavy burdens of sinful desires that we often try to hide from Him or ignore altogether.
Come to Him with your successes.
Come to Him with your failures.
Come to Him with your struggles.
Come to Him with your sin.
More than the physical rest we long for at times, this "rest for our souls" is our greatest need. A deeper satisfaction than mere circumstances.
He is gently calling us to Himself in our exhaustion. He knows where you are and is willing to enter into it and carry the load. As we run to Him in our weary and burdened moments He promises to give us rest at a level that we cannot achieve through anything else. Rest for your soul. Rest at the soul level is a deep trust that God will manage your burdens better than you ever could. That He knows exactly what you need, even if it's not what you want. That He will carry you and your burdens through it all for your good and His glory.
Run to Him. Run to His church. Run to his people. Lay down your burdens. Lay down your pride. Lay down your hollow strength. He will bring the rest your soul is desperate for through your dependence on Himself.
