Come, burdens & all
Written by Zachary McCann
The alarm clock is ringing and everything in your body is telling you to set it on fire and pull the covers over your face and sleep the day away. No matter what you do it seems like you can never be refreshed. Coffee becomes your pick me up drug of choice as you beg for relief. The once intimate relationship you had with Jesus has been replaced by the millennial heroine known as Facebook.
The world we live in says, "stay busy, don't think about the weightier things of life because the moment you do is the moment you have a head on collision with the reality of your heart." Once you stop self medicating or stop your entertainment binge is when your world gets a whole lot smaller. You realize what you were running from all along was your self. The state of your soul is too overwhelming to fight on your own and if you're really honest your thin back bone was never meant to carry such heavy burdens. Charles Spurgeon put it this way, "As the salt flavors every drop in the Atlantic, so does sin affect every atom of our nature. It is so sadly there, so abundantly there, that if you cannot detect it, you are deceived.”
The truth is you can't fight the lingering darkness in your soul on your own. Sin is a fire breathing dragon that will always burn up your good intentions. You will never be good enough or strong enough to face the reality of your fractured heart! You need a savior. You need a God who stands in the trenches of your brokenness and says, "Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest!” (Matthew 11:28) Bring your laziness, your good intentions and your continual shame to Jesus so you can finally quench your weary soul. Stop trying to summon enough will power to be a better person by trying harder and doing more. Rest will only be found in dragging your weary soul to Christ. Rest will never be found through your own efforts or trying to numb reality.
Once you have surrendered your burdens to Christ the most important thing is to be fully known by another God fearing man or woman. "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” (James 5:11) Did you catch that? If you want to get out the endless cycle of hauling your burdens around get around people that will love you and confront you. Healing takes place when you surrender your brokenness to Christ and bear your soul to others. In that order.
“Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life. (Isaiah 55:1-3) The wounds you have sustained from this battle called life may be rotting but, Jesus is saying, “come!” Your guilt may be eating away at your conscience like a buzzard hungry for a filthy carceous but, Jesus is saying, “come!” Your character may reek of a shady deal but, Jesus is saying, “come!"
Sin is a highway of fools gold that will leave you cold and numb. Sin will pick you up and temporally fulfill your emptiness, only to leave you begging for peace. Truth be told the only peace you will find in this life is found in Jesus. “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life!
